NGC 404 (Mirach's Ghost)
Type:
dwarf lenticular galaxy located in the constellation Andromeda near the bright star "Mirach" / Visual Brightness: 10.0 mag / Distance ~ 10 MLy
Inset top righ:
Composite image of the grey framed central area + near- and far-ultraviolet (NUV, FUV) data from the GALEX satellite telescope. FUV-bright sources appear blue/white, NUV-bright sources appear yellow. The FUV data reveals star forming regions in a ring around the central structure of NGC 404 which is not visible in the optical image. The central structure is NUV-bright which indicates that it is dominated by older stars.
